The Tocumen International Airport, the main airport in Panama and a regional hub for connections, transported 17,825,465 passengers in 2023, a new record figure surpassing the 16.5 million recorded in 2019, the terminal administration reported on Monday.
71% of the airport users in 2023 were connecting passengers, traveling to Miami (USA), Bogota and Medellin (Colombia), San Jose (Costa Rica), Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Cancun (Mexico), Orlando (USA), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Lima (Peru), and Guayaquil (Ecuador), “the most visited cities through Tocumen.”
The markets with the highest regional movement through the so-called ‘Panama hub’ last December, when 1,606,558 passengers were transported through Tocumen, are South America with 44%, North America with 30%, the Caribbean and Central America with 11% each, and Europe with 4%, according to official information.
Regarding international connections, it indicated that Tocumen maintains direct routes to 87 destinations through 16 commercial airlines that offer services to the main cities of America and Europe.
The Tocumen International Airport closed 2023 with 31 airlines operating, 15 for cargo and 16 for passengers, according to terminal statistics, which estimated at 208,573 metric tons the cargo moved through its terminal last year.
The performance in 2023 is the result of the airlines’ confidence in increasing their frequencies and destinations, due to the support we have provided them and the guarantees of safe and punctual operations. These facts strengthen the reputation and relevance of Panama as the main transit point and regional connectivity hub for passengers and cargo,” said Raffoul Arab, general manager of the Tocumen International Airport.
